The collection consists of the papers of Clark Howell from 1864-1936. The papers include scrapbooks, correspondence, published speeches and writings, genealogy, postcards, photographs, transcripts, obituaries, and an interview. These materials relate to Howell's life, career, travels, and to the Howell family; scrapbooks contain clippings, postcards, and obituaries which are of Howell, his father Evan, his mother Julia, his children Rosalie and Hugh M. Comer Howell. Correspondence is from Claude G. Bowes to John B. Stetson, Jr. Transcripts are of Evan P. Howell's Civil War letters; an interview is with Rosalie Howell.

Captain Evan P. Howell (1839-1905) was born December 10, 1839 in Warsaw, Georgia. In 1861 he married Julia Adelaide Erwin (1843-1906) in South Carolina. Julia was born January 17, 1843 in Erwinton, South Carolina and was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Erwin. The couple had seven children: Clark, Albert, Rosalie, Evan, Ida, Effie, and Adelaide. Clark Howell, editor, legislator, and politician, was born September 21,1863, in Barnwell County, South Carolina, and died November 14, 1936 in Atlanta, Georgia. After his father (Evan Park Howell) retired as publisher of the Atlanta Constitution, he replaced him and bought control of the newspaper in 1901, becoming editor-in-chief for 35 years.
